Critical dynamics of the Potts model: short-time Monte Carlo simulations
We calculate the new dinamic exponent of the 4-state Potts model,
using short-time simulations. Our estimates and obtained by following the behavior of the
magnetization or measuring the evolution of the time correlation function of
the magnetization corroborate the conjecture by Okano et. al. In addition,
these values agree with previous estimate of the same dynamic exponent for the
two-dimensional Ising model with three-spin interactions in one direction, that
is known to belong to the same universality class as the 4-state Potts model.
The anomalous dimension of initial magnetization
is calculated by an alternative way that mixes two different initial
conditions. We have also estimated the values of the static exponents
and . They are in complete agreement with the pertinent results of the
literature.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
The Impact of Life Trauma on the Mental Health and Suicidal Behavior: A Study from Portuguese Language Countries
The present dissertation was written in a scientific article format, allowing the
development of research skills in field of Clinical and Health Psychology expected by
students on this stage of their academic path, according with EuroPsy – The European
Certificate in Psychology. Several studies approach the impact of life trauma on mental
health and suicidal behavior in several populations, however, no references are
available to studies that consider these variables in the Community of Portuguese
Language Countries (CPLC). Therefore, the present study intends to fill this gap and
aims to 1) describe the traumatic experiences, mental health levels and suicidal
behavior of participants, comparing differences between country of residence; 2) assess
correlations between traumatic experiences and mental health, and suicidal behavior;
and 3) assess the impact of exposure to a lifetime traumatic event on mental health and
suicidal behavior. The participants of this study were 1006 individuals from Portugal,
Brazil, and African Countries with Portuguese as an Official Language (ACPOL). The
measurement instruments included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Portuguese
version of the Brief Symptoms Inventory-18 (BSI-18), the Brief Trauma Questionnaire
(BTQ), and the Portuguese version of Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQR). The ACPOL participants reported greater impact of war, while Portuguese
participants reported greater impact of disasters and Brazilian participants reported
greater impact of psychological and sexual abuse, assault, and death of a family
member. Brazilian participants showed the worst levels of mental health and greater
suicidal thoughts, but Portuguese participants showed greater probability of
committing suicide. Although strong correlations were found between traumatic
experiences and mental health levels and suicidal behavior, only physical and sexual
abuse were positively correlated with all BSI-18 and SBQ-R subscales. A linear
regression analysis revealed that traumatic experiences explained 23.4% of the variance
in mental health levels and 11.6% of the variance in suicide probability.
(Giller, 2010), comprometendo a saúde mental e física da pessoa (World Health
Organization, 2020; World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa, n.d.).
e constituem um fator de risco para o comportamento suicidário (Pham et al., 2021;
Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18); o Brief Trauma Questionnaire (BTQ); e a versão
portuguesa do Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R).
comportamento suicidário: (1) zona de guerra ou área militar com tragédias de guerra; (2) acidente grave; (3) desastre natural ou tecnológico; (4) doença com risco de vida;
BSI-18 e do SBQ-R.

Multifunctional metal-organic frameworks : from academia to industrial applications
After three decades of intense and fundamental research on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), is there anything left to say or to explain? The synthesis and properties of MOFs have already been comprehensively described elsewhere. It is time, however, to prove the nature of their true usability: technological applications based on these extended materials require development and implementation as a natural consequence of the up-to-known intensive research focused on their design and preparation. The current large number of reviews on MOFs emphasizes practical strategies to develop novel networks with varied crystal size, shape and topology, being mainly devoted to academic concerns. The present survey intends to push the boundaries and summarise the state-of-the-art on the preparation of promising (multi) functional MOFs in worldwide laboratories and their use as materials for industrial implementation. This review starts, on the one hand, to describe several tools and striking examples of remarkable and recent (multi) functional MOFs exhibiting outstanding properties (e.g., in gas adsorption and separation, selective sorption of harmful compounds, heterogeneous catalysis, luminescent and corrosion protectants). On the other hand, and in a second part, it intends to use these examples of MOFs to incite scientists to move towards the transference of knowledge from the laboratories to the industry. Within this context, we exhaustively review the many efforts of several worldwide commercial companies to bring functional MOFs towards the daily use, analysing the various patents and applications reported to date. Overall, this review goes from the very basic concepts of functional MOF engineering and preparation ending up in their industrial production on a large scale and direct applications in society
Apesar disso, o desconhecimento do
42 realizaram a avaliação psicológica. A bateria de avaliação consistiu nos
seguintes instrumentos: BSI, MOCA, IAFAI, GDS e WHOQOL-Bref e a análise
WHOQOL-Bref (domínio 2 e 4) e no IAFAI (IE).
A amostra global diferiu
The main goal of this dissertation is to characterize the active patients of the
CRIA, with 50 or more years, social and demographically; in respect to their
consumption and clinically, comparing them according to the program of opioid
maintenance treatment received by them. The growing aging of the general
population brings new challenges such as the increase of the age population
with substance use disorders (EMCDA, 2010). This group has been increasing
and is expected to continue until at least 2020 (Han, Gfroerer, Colliver, &
Penne, 2009). Nevertheless, the ignorance of this phenomenon is huge and
more studies are largely necessary, especially due to the specific vulnerabilities
of this age group. Of the 102 active patients in this age group, 71 meet the
necessary conditions for participating in the study and 42 underwent
psychological evaluation. The assessment battery consisted of the following
instruments: BSI, MOCA, IAFAI, GDS and WHOQOL-Bref and data analysis
was performed using SPSS - Version 20. Significant differences between the
two treatment programs were found at MOCA, WHOQOL-Bref (domain 2 and
4) and IAFAI (IE). In all these cases the methadone maintenance program got
worse clinical outcomes than the buprenorphine maintenance program. The
global sample differed significantly from the normal population in the
WHOQOL-Bref (general domain), showing worst results of quality of life; and in
some domains of the BSI, obtaining better results of psychological
symptomatology. Despite those differences the sample is better than expected
due the life context in which they are embedded
An alternative order parameter for the 4-state Potts model
We have investigated the dynamic critical behavior of the two-dimensional
4-state Potts model using an alternative order parameter first used by
Vanderzande [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. \textbf{20}, L549 (1987)] in the study of
the Z(5) model. We have estimated the global persistence exponent by
following the time evolution of the probability that the considered
order parameter does not change its sign up to time . We have also obtained
the critical exponents , , , and using this alternative
definition of the order parameter and our results are in complete agreement
with available values found in literature.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Optimized robot strategy, ball filters and new referee whistle hardware filter
This paper briefly describes the main changes on the Minho Team robots since the last RoboCup edition. Work has been carried out on the robots in order to constantly improve their capabilities, based on the experience from previous participations. The main topics to deal in this paper are related with the optimization of movement on the field and also game strategy software, a ball filter recently
implemented on the robots in order to follow only the correct ball. Also on this paper a
description of the whole software implementation is made by describing the main
Algorithm. A new referee whistle hardware filter has been developed in the last year
and is here described its electronics
Mining ice in genomes: comparative genomics of integrative elements in prokaryotic genomes
Like temperate phages, ICEs can integrate into the host chromosome and replicate with it, and like plasmids they are transferred by conjugation. These elements contribute to horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in prokaryotes, and are responsible for the transmission of traits such as antibiotic resistance, virulence factors and biofilm formation. Its core structure can be divided in three modules: maintenance, dissemination and regulation. The maintenance module encodes a recombinase, which is responsible for ICEs integration into host replicons. The dissemination module includes the conjugating system, typically IV secretion system (T4SS). The regulation module comprises the genes that regulate ICEs transfer. The studies on ICEs are very recent and therefore the knowledge about their cargo content, their size and how they conjugate and integrate into the host genome is still reduced. Therefore, studying these elements is of vital importance. This is the first large-scale study that identifies integrative conjugative elements in all the sequenced prokaryotic genomes. In the 1055 available genomes, we identified and characterized the distribution of 315 ICEs. We were also able to identify T4SS systems not involved in conjugation, and their distribution was compared to those of ICEs. We used data from a previous work of our laboratory, which characterised plasmid mobility, in order to compare the T4SS systems involved in the conjugation of ICEs and conjugative plasmids. We were able to contradict the mainstream idea of ICE being the major contributors to HGT in Firmicutes, whereas that role was played by conjugative plasmids in Proteobacteria. Because this is a pioneer study, the obtained results may open new avenues of reasearch in this field
Synthesis and transformation of halochromones
Chromones (4H-1-benzopyran-4-ones) are one of the most
abundant groups of naturally occurring oxygen containing heterocyclic
compounds possessing a benzo-γ-pyrone framework, 1a. The
significance of these widely spread and highly diverse compounds
is far beyond the important biological functions they assume in
nature [1, 2].
Natural and synthetic chromone derivatives have been assigned
as lead structures in drug development with some already being
marketed [3]. The majority of the naturally occurring chromones
are 2- and 3-aryl derivatives, called flavones 1b and isoflavones 1c,
respectively. However, other types of chromones have also been
found in the plant kingdom, such as 3-methylchromones 1d and 2-
styrylchromones 1e (Fig. 1).University of Aveiro, Fundação para
